The Italian job
RUSSELL Crowe made a flying visit to Melbourne to show his rugby league team, South Sydney, the true charm of the city.
Crowe asked good mate Nick Giannopoulos to organise a team night out on Wednesday for himself, team co-owner Peter Holmes a Court and the burly blokes themselves to help the Rabbitohs acclimatise for their game against Melbourne Storm tomorrow night.
First stop was dinner at Lygon St restaurant Villa Romana, before the boys headed to a surprise comedy gig at city bar Six Links by bus.
Giannopoulos organised a host of comedians including Dave Hughes and Peter Helliar.
After the private gig, the team headed to famous Italian eatery Pellegrinis in Bourke St.
"He loved it," Giannopoulos told Confidential yesterday.
"Russell wanted to show the boys a quintessential Melbourne night. He used to hang out at places like Pellegrinis when he was in Melbourne working in the late 1980s and early 1990s."
After their Italian sojourn, the boys hit the hay while Crowe and Giannopoulos were seen kicking on at several bars, including the trendy Madame Brussels in Bourke St.
Crowe flew home to Sydney yesterday morning for business commitments.(heraldsun)

Raiders bait Bunnies
by: Scott Brooks (sportal.com.au)
A strong finish by the Canberra Raiders has seen them overcome a disappointing Rabbitohs side by 16-10 at Telstra Stadium on Saturday night.
The Bunnies went to the break leading 6-0 and held a 10-6 advantage well into the second-stanza, but the fumbling Raiders grew an extra leg in the final stages to score two late tries and steal the result in front of 11,088 fans.
It was a sloppy affair with the Raiders making several more errors than their Rabbitoh counterparts, but the Green Machine had that extra bit of flair which served them well when it counted most.
Souths once again struggled to find any sort of cohesion in attack and have now lost five of their previous six matches to be in danger of slipping from the top eight by the completion of this round.
The first half was littered with missed opportunities, particularly from the Raiders, who were denied four-pointers on three occasions in the opening 20 minutes.
Rabbitohs fullback David Peachey was denied a try in the 24th minute after a tap down by winger Reece Simmonds was ruled to have gone forward, but it wasn't long after that when a try was registered, centre Shannon Hegarty running off a superb one-arm pass from rampaging interchange forward Jaiman Lowe to score wide out. Halfback Joe Williams converted to give Souths a 6-0 lead after 27 minutes.
Canberra halfback Todd Carney missed a penalty goal on half-time to leave the Bunnies six-points in front at the break.
The Raiders continued to make basic errors after the resumption, but sprung in action in the 51st minute when five-eighth Terry Campese burst through the defence to send rookie winger David Milne on a 60-metre dash to the line. Carney's conversion leveled the scores at 6-all.
Penalty goals by Williams in the 56th and 60th minutes helped the Rabbitohs out to a 10-6 lead.
But a couple of dropped balls in poor field position by the locals gave the Raiders a solid period of possession and they finally cracked the Bunnies' line in the 68th minute when a deft Neville Costigan ball sent Carney over for converted try, giving Canberra a 12-10 lead.
Souths' blew their last genuine chance in the 73rd minute when a Peachey grubber from a scrum was knocked forward by Hegarty just as winger Nathan Merritt was about to put downward pressure on the ball.
The Raiders finally sealed it in the 77th minute courtesy of a try in the right corner by centre Adrian Purtell off an Alan Tongue cross-field kick.
Raiders 16
Tries: Milne, Carney, Purtell
Conversions: Carney 2
Rabbitohs 10
